When launching the kite — particularly from the companionway and assuming you have a non-overlapping headsail — use the windward sheet to barber haul the jib clew up towards the centreline, to allow a cleaner hoist to leeward.
Keeping the jib sheeted close to the centreline as for the Trick Hoist, almost backing it, can make a gybe set slicker. Andy writes for dinghy and yacht racing magazines including Seahorse, Yachts and yachting, Yachting World and Sailing Word.
Essential guide to boat handling By Amazon Customer One of the only modern boat handling books targeted at club racers, this book doesn't try to cover all aspects of a race badly as many do, but covers boathandling exclusively very very well.
If you sail a fast asymmetric dinghy this is the essential guide to boat handling. It covers tacking and gybing, in light wind, medium and strong winds, as well as hoists and drops and breaks down each maneuver into simple steps with clear pictures using modern dinghies.
I've used it's methods and breakdowns of maneuvers for coaching RS's, 's, 's and 's at Minorca sailing and it's helped me coach good sailors as well as myself how to do that gybe in 25knts perfectly every time. Informative book. By Steve Great book for the new comer to asy sailing. Easy reading. Current and up to date with a range of sailing classes.
