Geocaching mit garmin etrex vista hcx
None have tides info unless you purchase the optional Topo software the Etrex H and Gekos don't accept maps. The Vista HCx is the top of the Etrex line; so, you can't go wrong with that!
Good unit for your stated purposes. Also look at getting Mapsource Topo so you have detailed terrain maps on the unit. You can post now and register later. If you have an account, sign in now to post with your account. Note: Your post will require moderator approval before it will be visible.

Please note for all occasions: any existing. The advantage of using this, as you might later find, is that it will allow several files such as a gmapsupp. Refer to 'Questions and Answers' and 'Garmin Maps'.
Lambertus maintains the site that allows your OSM selection. You should find much to interest you there. First sorry to not have checked in for a while. I kind off gave up on ever understanding and already was thinking about. I am such a electronic NOOB. I hope you are not haxing my pc or something cause I am following your steps. Maybe, iam doing this wrong again. Maybe someday I will finally be able to go caching with my new GPS. The following link got me open street map of UK complete with contour lines and many public footpaths.
The map was pre-made and comes zipped. Just unzip and copy to micro SD card. Works with Etrex vista HCX. Nuvi , Oregon and many more. I am in UK, too, and have used the routing maps from TalkyToaster for some time. My thanks to Martin Overton for providing that excellent facility. I overlay the routing maps on my Legend HCx with transparent non-routing maps created from mkgmap, incorporating my own.
For this, my thanks go to Charlie Ferrero and his excellent tutorials on the subject. I should not have been able to achieve that without his guiding hand. Don't worry about the listing on the eTrex, as long as you are where u need to be then just go to the nearest. Hope this helps, if not get back to me. You can post now and register later. The one place where this increased sensitivity makes a huge difference to us is while driving: in the car with tinted windows, the C can't hold a lock at all; in the one with clear windows, the C can hold a lock but only if it is held near the window or left on the dashboard.
The HCx can keep a good lock anywhere in any position in either car -- it's the one we rely on now for auto-routing. These lags vanished when we switched to non-NT maps. I have not heard of this being a problem on anything other than HCx models, so it may not be an issue at all on a Cx.
And not everyone with an HCx sees this problem. Our C can sometimes sit there attempting to get its initial satellite lock for 30 or 45 seconds, while the HCx has it in about 5 seconds.
