There are a large number of introductory quantum mechanics text books. Is there a need for yet another one? This book is an expansion of and the first Western version of a textbook used exten- sively in India. The senior author, a distinguished optical physicist, is a recipient of the Esther Beller Hoffman award of the Optical Society of America for his pedagog- ical and writing skills.

His other books on optics and optical fibers have been translated into a number of languages. Hence, I had high expecta- tions when I started reviewing this book, and I was not disappointed.

I should also, in the spirit of full disclosure, note that not only have I co- authored a recent book with Professor Ghatak 1 ; but, more importantly, I learnt my introductory quantum mechanics from an earlier version of this text book many years ago, at the University of Madras.

That book, published in by the MacMillan Company of India, came out at a mere pages and cost Rupees My dog-eared copy of this early version is still sitting in my book shelf today! The most important fact about this book is the wonderful admixture of theory and applications.

This is especially important for new entrants to the field with varying backgrounds and interests. The second noteworthy aspect of the book are the large number of worked problems at the end of each chapter approximately Therefore, this makes the book ideal for self-study.

There are a number of unsolved problems also. However, an answer key is missing for these unsolved problems. The mathematically-minded student will learn much from the treat- ment of the JWKB approximation Chap.
